Virtual experiences to enjoy with your kids

If, like us, you have suddenly added ‘teacher’ to your job title, you could be having good days and those that you don’t want to mention.  We all know that this time is hard for everyone in Shropshire, including our children, which is why at Samuel Wood we want to help.  Our team, from the comfort of their own homes, have searched the internet to bring you five virtual experiences that you will enjoy as much as your kids.

1. A night at the museum

Featured in the Ben Stiller film, Night at the Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History may not come alive during your tour but you can certainly have lots of fun.  With a kids section full of amazing interactive features, you may be sneaking on for another look when the little ones are in bed.  In the permanent exhibition, navigate through the Mammal Hall where you can find animals from Africa to Australia. Also on the first floor is a wonderful collection of dinosaurs – always a favourite with the kids – and don’t miss the ‘objects of wonder’ on the second floor.

2. Live cams

Live cameras give you a fascinating look at nature and beyond, and Explore is the home of the world’s largest live nature network, who want you to fall in love with the world again.  Select Oceans to find the live cam of the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Shark Lagoon, watch as you get up close and personal with Sand Tiger, Zebra, and Whitetip sharks and more. In African Wildlife, Tembe Elephant Park is renowned for having the largest elephants in Africa – and the planet! On each live cam you will find a variety of facts via the ‘Facts’ button, and the Information tab will provide you with the background on where it’s being filmed and what you might see.

3. Step into the past

Your child may be studying the Mayan culture, and what better learning tool than allowing them to see a Mayan temple in virtual reality?  They can gain a sense of the scale of the buildings complete with sound effects of their natural surroundings.

4. Go on an adventure

Set out to explore the South Base Camp of the world’s highest peak, Everest, which sits on the border between Nepal and China.  With the interactive 360-degree views you can look at the 8,848 metre summit.  Experience the journey and, who knows, maybe it will be on your wish list when we can get our adventure boots back on in the future.

5. Go climbing

If you like rock climbing then you will be familiar with the reputation of El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park -- the most iconic rock climb on earth.  Located amongst the spectacular landscape of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, and standing over 900 metres tall, El Capitan is one of the park’s most recognised sights.  Incredibly, it has been successfully climbed by free climbers, first Lynn Hill and then later Alex Honnold, who documented his experience in the award-winning film, Free Solo.  If you haven’t seen this incredible film, we would recommend you watch this first before you too attempt to climb El Capitan from the comfort of your sofa.

Near you

There are so many organisations offering virtual experiences, you will be surprised how many you can find.  We are also offering virtual tours of properties for sale in Shropshire as buyers are still looking and new homes are coming onto the market.  We have been busy lately keeping sales progressing and answering your questions – remember, even though our offices are closed, we are still at the end of a phone, just call us.

We hope you enjoy your virtual experiences and we’d love to know your favourites.
